Music Diary – 11th December

Welcomt to my Music Diary – today for the 11th December!

Darryljonesbig

Happy birthday to bass player Darryl Jones, who was born on the 11th December 1961 in Chicago! Also called „The Munch“, Darryl started his career as a session man. One of the first recordings he did with Vince Wilburn Jr, who was the nephew of Jazz musician Miles Davis. At that time Miles was looking for a new bass player and so Vince vouched for him. The consequence: Trumpet player Miles Davis mentored Darry Jones and gave him his first touring gig in 1983. Jones‘ bass playing can be heard on the two albums „Decoy“ (1984) and „You’re Under Arrest“ (1985). Over the years Darryl Jones recorded with a lot of great musicians of all genres, like Herbie Hancock, Mike Stern, John ScofieldBob Dylan, Cher, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Eric Clapton and Joan Armatrading.

In 1993 he joined The Rolling Stones and replaced Billy Wyman. Since he has started working for Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, he played on the Stones albums „Voodoo Lounge“ (1994), „Bridges to Babylon“ (1997) and „A Bigger Bang“ (2005). His playing is also featured on the live LPs „Stripped“ (1995), „No Security“ (ed. 1998), „Live Licks“ (ed. 2004), „Shine a Light“ (2006) and „Hyde Park Live“ (2013) and  for the Stones.  Darryl Jones is also a member of the Musical band Stone Raiders.

Music Diary – 15th November

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 15th November!

Frida (Abba)

Happy birthday to Frida Lyngstad, who was born on the 15th November 1945 in Bjørkåsen, Norway! Frida became famous as the second female singer (beside Agnetha Fältskog) in the Swedish pop group ABBA. In 1970 she crossed paths with her future husband Benny Andersson, and one year later her solo debut simply called „Frida“ was released. The Swedish newspaper „Dagens Nyheter“ wrote about the LP: „Professional, sure and certain LP-debut … low-key but self-assured personality with sprinkles of temperament, humor and tenderness. And she sings in such a way that you understand that she’s got something between her ears – she sings, in other words, in a very intelligent way“. Intersting note: All four future members of ABBA sang back-up vocals on this song!

In 1972 Frida, Benny formed with the couple Agnetha Fältskog and
Björn Ulvaeus a band under the moniker „Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid„.
The first recorded song of the quartet was „People Need Love„, which was released in June 1972 and reached number 17 in Sweden. One year later the band name was changed into ABBA – the four letters stand for the prenames of the members. And with the track „Ring Ring“ and the debut album of the same name the first breakthrough for the group happened. The song became a big hit in many European countries and also in South Africa. This marked the start of the outstandig and successful carreer of ABBA. Until the break-up in 1982 they sold over 380 million albums and singles worldwide. So ABBA is still one of the most successful pop acts in music history.

Frida continued here solo career after the break-up with the album „Something’s Going On„, which was produced by Phil Collins. Over 1.5 million copies of the LP were sold and also the outtake „“I Know There’s Something Going On“ became a big hit.

In 1984 the next studio album „Shine“ hit the stores and Frida concentrated more on several projects like her charity work for „Artister för miljö“ than on her career as a singer. In 1996 her last album to date „Djupa Andetag“ (in Swedish lyrics) was released.
