Black_Sabbath_debut_album

On the 13th February 1970 – and yes, it was a Friday – the legendaty self-titled debut album by Black Sabbath was released in the UK. The LP reached No. 8 on the British chart and this recording is considered as one of the first Heavy Metal performances ever. „Black Sabbath“ hit the US market a few months later – on the 1st June 1970.

All seven songs were recorded on the 16th October 1969 at the Regent Sound Studios in London and produced by Rodger Bain. The only single outtake was „Evil Woman“ (a cover version of a Crow song) with „Wicked World“ on the b-side, which was released already one month before, on the 9th January 1970. Music Diary – 10th February

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 10th February!

cliffburtonprofHappy birthday to Mr. Clifford „Cliff“ Lee Burton, who was born on the 10th February 1962 in Castro Valley, California (USA)!

As a boy, little Clifford was introduced to classical music by his father and he started to take piano lessons. At the age of 13, Cliff began playing the bass like a maniac – six hours at least per day!

As a student, he founded his first band EZ-Street, featuring also guitarist „Big“ Jim Martin and drummer Mike Bordin (these two guys became members of the legendary crossover formation Faith No More). With Martin, Cliff Burton formed later the group Agents of Misfortune. In 1982, another chapter has began for the bassman: He joined his first major act called Trauma. Performing at the Whisky a Go Go, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich from Metallica, which had formed the band the previous year, attended the show. After the concert they ask Cliff to join the band as the new bass player – and Burton agreed. He recorded only the three Metallica albums “Kill ‘Em All” (1983), “Ride the Lightning” (1984) and “Master of Puppets“(1986).

On the 27th September 1986, Cliff Burton was killed in a tragic accident. The tour bus crashed due to black ice during the Scandinavia tour between Stockholm and Copenhagen. Burton was thrown through the window and the bus fell on him. The musician died at the age of only 24 years.

Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe)

Happy birthday to Mr. Vincent Neil Wharton aka Vince Neil, who was born on the 8th February 1961 in Hollywood, California (USA).

Neil attended Sunflower Intermediate School and later Royal Oak High School in Glendora. Beside his interest in music he was also into surfing, basketball, football and wrestling. And during his highschool time, he became friends with drummer Tommy Lee. In the seventies, Neil Vince was the singer in the band Rockandi, before he was asked to join the Heavy Metal band Mötley Crüe, which was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx and Neil’s long time mate and drummer Tommy. In 1981, the debüt album „Too Fast for Love“ was released and with the second LP „Shout at the Devil“ (feat. the singles „Looks That Kill“ and „Too Young to Fall in Love„), Mötley Crüe became a huge act on the Metal scene.

During a head-on collision, Razzle was killed and Neil was charged with „Driving under Influence“ and „Vehicular Manslaughter“ and sentenced to 30 days in jail. He also received a $ 2,000,000 fine. The upcoming Mötley Crüe album „Theatre of Pain„, which was released on 21st June 1985, was dedicated to Dingley and the band started into their Glam Metal phase, which was refined on the next and also very successful albums „Girls, Girls, Girls“ (1987) and „Dr. Feelgood“ (1989), which went No. 1 in the USA.

Music Diary – 3rd December

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 3rd December!Ozzy Osbourne

Happy birthday to John Michael Osbourne, who is better known as „Ozzy„! The also called „Prince of Darkness“ was born on the 3rd December 1948 in Birmingham, UK. In the seventies the singer joined Black Sabbath, whose unique and very dark, heavy sound has been considered as one of the developers of the Heavy Metal genre. Until his leaving in 1979 he recorded many milestones with Black Sabbath, like „Paranoid„, „War Pigs“ (both 1970) and „Iron Man“ (1971).

Ozzy started a very successful solo career and until today he released eleven studio albums including the milestones „Blizzard of Ozz“ (1979 – featuring the classics „Crazy Train„, „Suicide Solution“ and „Mr. Crowley„),  „Diary of a Madman“ (1981), „Bark at the Moon“ (1983), „No more Tears“ (1991 – featuring the hit „Mama, I’m coming Home„) and the cover album „Under Cover“ (2005). Over the years he reunited with Black Sabbath, like in 2011 to record the comeback album „13„.

His biography „I am Ozzy“ gives a perfect insight in his outstanding life including many and funny episodes behind the reality show „The Osbournes„.

Music Diary – 27th September

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 27th September!

Clifford Lee Burton (10th February 1962 – 27th September 1986)

Clifford Lee Burton (10th February 1962 – 27th September 1986)

On the 27th September 1986 Metallica’s bass player Cliff Burton was killed in a tragic accident. The tour bus crashed due to black ice during the Scandinavia tour between Stockholm and Copenhagen. Burton was thrown through the window and the bus fell on him. The musician died at the age of only 24 years.

Burton joined Metallica in 1982 and he contributed his bass lines for the first three studio albums „Kill ‚Em All“ (1983), „Ride the Lightning“ (1984) and „Master of Puppets„(1986). And for the song „To live is to die“, which is on the fourth album „…And Justice For All“ (1986), he received the poshumous writing credits. On the 4th April 2009 Burton was also inducted posthumously with Metallica into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also he was selected as the 9th greatest bass player of all time in an online poll by the Rolling Stone magazine in 2001.

Jason Newsted, who played for Flotsam and Jetsam, replaced Burton in 1986. After 15 years with Metallica, Newsted left the band in January 2001 and Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy Osbourne) became the new bassist two years later.

Music Diary – 19th March

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 19th March!

RandyRhoadsBig

On the 19th March 1982, guitarist and former Quiet Riot member Randy Rhoads died. The musician was killed in a plane crash.

Randy played that time in Ozzy Osbourne’s band and the whole entourage was touring through the USA. On the way to the next show in Orlando (Florida), they stopped on a property where on an airstrip some small helicopters and planes were parked. Andrew Aycock, the bus driver, took a test flight with keyboarder Don Airey and tour manager Jake Duncan. After a safe landing, Andrew took another flight – this time with guitarist Randy Rhoads and makeup artist Rachel Youngblood. During that flight the tragic happened: The plane buzzed over the tourbus, where Ozzy and the other band members were sleeping. After a second close pass the third didn’t succeed and one of the wings clipped the bus, broke and the plane was out of control and crashed into a near garage and bursted into flames. All three people were killed instantly and the bodies were burned beyond recognition. Randy Rhoads died at the age of only 26 years.

Music Diary – 21st June

Hello dear Musicmaniacs around the world!

On the 21st June 1997 I attended another Jethro Tull gig – this time in Munich at the Rudi-Sedlmeyer-Halle.

And this one was very remarkable because the setlist was full with fine surprises like „A Song for Jeffrey„, „Skating away“ or „Acres Wild„! And as another surprise Mr. Leslie Mandoki joined the band for the tune „Back to Budapest„.

Full setlist and review you can finde here (just scroll down to 21/06/1997):
https://melomaneblog.wordpress.com/category/concerts-june/

And today one of the Tull family has his birthday:
Mr. Don Airey (Keyboard Player), who toured with the band during the „Crest of a Knave“ worldtour in 1987, was born back in 1948! Happy bday!

Cheers,

Alex Melomane
