Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 16th February!

On the 16th February 1972, Led Zeppelin played their very first show in Australia. The Australianasian tour (16th – 29th February through Australia and New Zealand) kicked off in Perth at the Subiaco Oval. The local police battled with over 500 fans, who tried to get into the concert. And over 4,000 people were waiting outside with no tickets, hoping to get into the venue in some way.

The setlist featured songs like „Immigrant Song“, „Heartbreaker“, „Black Dog“, „Since I’ve been loving you“, „Stairway to Heaven“, „Going to California“, „That’s the Way, „Tangerine“, „Dazed and Confused“, „What is and what should never be“ and „Whole Lotta Love“.

After this six date tour through Australia and New Zealand, Led Zeppelin never toured again on this side of the world.

Music Diary – 14th February

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 14th February!

On the 14th February 1970, The Who recorded their legendary show in Leeds. The band performed at the local University. „Live At Leeds“ was released three months later on the 16th May 1970 and it’s still considered as one of the best live albums ever.

The original tracklist (six songs) on the first LP pressing features the classics „My Generation„, „Magic Bus„, „Substitute“ and also the cover versions of „Young Man Blues„, „Summertime Blues“ and „Shakin‘ All Over„.

Beside the outstanding recording, the packaging was also a real eyecatcher. Issued as a bootleg LP, the gatefold sleeve housed a package with12 facsimiles of various memorabilia. Also two photos, a poster and handwritten notes was enclosed.

Music Diary – 7th February

Welcomte to my Music Diary – today for the 7th February!

On the 7th February 1969, The Who recorded one of their signature songs at Morgan Studio’s in London, UK: „Pinball Wizard„, which was produced by Kit Lambert. Written by guitarist Pete Townshend, this track was also featured on the legendary Rock opera double album „Tommy„. Released on the 7th March, the single reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 19 in the USA.

For the flip side, The Who recorded an instrumental called „Dogs (Part Two)“, which was written by drummer Keith Moon.

Music Diary – 15th January

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 15th January!

On the 15th January 1965, the very first single by The Who was released in the UK. „I can’t explain“ (with „Bald Headed Woman“ on the flip side). The song, written by guitarist Pete Townshend, went on No. 8 on the UK chart. The recording session was produced by Shel Talmy and beside The Who, some guest appearences are featured on the single: The British vocal trio The Ivy League and Perry Ford on piano can be also heard on „I can’t explain“. It was also the rumour, that Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page added some rhythm guitar parts, but this is still not really proved.

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)

Happy birthday to guitarist Jimmy Page, who was born on the 9th January 1944 in Heston, London (UK)! Before he founded the legendary Hardrock band Led Zeppelin, Jimmy worked as a session musician in the sixties in London. From 1966 until 1968 Page became a member of The Yardbirds. Shortly after the band break-up he founded with John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Robert Plant one of the most successful bands in rock history: Led Zeppelin.

After the death of John Bonham (25th September 1980), the remaining trio called it a day. During the twelve existing years, the group recorded eight studio albums:
“Led Zeppelin” (1969), “Led Zeppelin II” (1969), “Led Zeppelin III” (1970), “Led Zeppelin IV“(1971), “Houses of the Holy” (1973), “Physical Graffiti” (1975), “Presence” (1976) and “In Through the Out Door” (1979). Some of their biggest hits are „Whole lotta Love„, „Stairway to Heaven“ and „Kashmir„. Led Zeppelin sold approxiamtely 200 – 300 million records worldwide.

Jimmy Page worked aftwerwards on several projects like The Firm and Coverdale Page. In 1994, he reunited with Robert Plant for MTV’s „Unplugged“ series. This session was later released on CD („No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded„) and DVD („No Quarter Unledded„). In 1998 the follow-up „Walking into Clarksdale“ was released.

On the 10th December 2007, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin feat. John Bonham’s son Jason Bonham on drums, played an unique concert at the O2 Arena in London. This charity event was also later available on CD and DVD under the name „Celebration Day„.

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)

Happy birthday to Mr. John Baldwin, better known as John Paul Jones, who was born on the 3rd January 1946 in Sidcup, Kent (UK). John is a multi instrumentalist and became famous as the bassist and keybord player for Led Zeppelin. Working as a session player, he crossed the paths with guitarist Jimmy Page (who was playing in The Yardbirds at that time) very often. In 1968, Page was planning to found a new band. After recruiting singer Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham, also John Paul Jones joined this group which was called firstly „The New Yardbirds“. After a mini tour through Scandinavia, the band was baptised Led Zeppelin.

Until the disbanding in 1980, the legendary studio albums “Led Zeppelin” (1969), “Led Zeppelin II” (1969), “Led Zeppelin III” (1970), “Led Zeppelin IV“(1971), “Houses of the Holy” (1973), “Physical Graffiti” (1975), “Presence” (1976) and “In Through the Out Door” (1979) were released.

After his time with Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones has worked with many artists like R.E.M., Jars of Clay, Ben E. King, Peter Gabriel, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Cinderella, The Mission,  Brian Eno – just to name a few. Beside this and some solo stuff, Jones became in 2009 a member of the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, which features Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age).

Music Diary – 20th November

Keith Moon (The Who)

On the 20th November 1973 the Who drummer Keith Moon collapsed during a concert at the Cow Palace in Dale City, near to San Francisco. After approximately one hour, Moon began to falter during „Won’t Get Fooled Again„, slumped over his drum kit and passed finally out. He was carried offstage by the roadies.

Backstage the drummer received a special treatment and meanwhile guitarist Pete Townshend asked the crowd: „Can anybody play the drums? I mean somebody good!“ Scot Halpin, also a drummer, and his friend Mike Danese watched the scene, while Danese told the security staff, that the 19 years old Scot can play. Bill Graham, the concert promoter, asked: „Can you do it?“. After Halpin’s „Yes“, he filled in for Keith and played. After a Brandy he started while Townshend instructed him: „I’m going to lead you. I’m going to cue you.“ So the Who had a new member for three songs. They played the Blues standards Smokestack Lightning“ and „Spoonful“ before going into the Who song „Naked Eye„. So after approximately thirty minutes of absence, Keith Moon came back on stage to finish the show.

Music Diary – 8th November

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 8th November!

On the 8th November 1971 one of the most legendary LPs in Rock history was released: The fourth studio album by Led Zeppelin, simply titled „IV„, hit the stores. It’s also called „Four Symbols„, „The Fourth Album“ or „Led Zeppelin IV“. Although nothing is printed on the cover, neither title nor band name and no picture of the group or members is featured on the artwork, „Led Zeppelin IV“ has been sold over 37 million copies worldwide and with a 23-times platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, it’s after Michael Jackson’s „Thriller“ the second-best-selling album in the USA ever.

The eight songs were recorded between December 1970 and March 1971 at several locations and produced by guitarist Jimmy Page. Many of the songs became classics in Rock history – like „Black Dog„, „Rock and Roll“ and „Stairway to Heaven„.

Music Diary – 3rd November

BERT JANSCH (3rd November 1943 – 5th October 2011)

On the 3rd November 1943, the Folk singer and guitarist Herbert „Bert“ Jansch was born in Glasgow, Scotland. In the sixties he was very popular in London as an outstanding singer-songwriter and became one of the leading figures of the British Folk revival. In 1968 he was a co-founder of the band Pentangle, which broke up in 1972. Later he worked on different projects and in the eighties Bert Jansch reformed Pentangle but left the group in 1995.

After that and until his death on the 5th October 2011, Bert Jansch continued working as a solo artist. He recorded over 20 albums and his unique musical style influenced a number of other artitsts like Al Stewart, Paul Simon, Johnny Marr, Elton John, Ian Anderson, Bernie Taupin, Bernard Butler, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Graham Coxon, Donovan, Neil Young, Fleet Foxes, Devendra Banhart, Neil Halstead and Roy Harper.

Music Diary – 30th October

Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 30th October!

Drummer Chris Slade was born on the 30th October 1946 in Pontypridd, Wales (UK). The Welsh musician has worked with many acts – just to name a few: Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Tom Jones, Asia, Uriah Heep, David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Gary Moore. Slade also played with Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page in The Firm.

But Chris Slade is best known for his drumming for AC/DC from 1989 to 1994. He joined in November 1989 and took over the place from Simon Wright. In this period he recorded the studio album „The Razors Edge“ (1990). His powerful drumming is also featured on the releases „Live“ (released 1992), „Big Gun“ (1993 – Single for the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie „Last Action Hero„) and „Live at Donington“ (recorded 1991 – DVD). During the recording sessions for the next AC/DC album „Ballbreaker“ (1995), Malcolm Young told him, that the band wanted to do a reunion with former drummer Phil Rudd. Chris Slade about his time with AC/DC: „It was an honour and a privilege to play with those guys.“

In 2015, Chris Slade returned to AC/DC and took over the place from Phil Rudd again, who get into big legal troubles.The official band’s announcement: “Chris Slade will be on drums for the upcoming Rock or Bust world tour.”
