David Noel Redding (25th December 1945 – 11th May 2003)

On the 25th December 1945, David Noel Redding was born in Folkestone, UK. Redding became in 1966 the bass player for Hendrix‘ band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. At the age of 9 years, David Noel started playing violin, mandolin and guitar. Before joining Jimi Hendrix as the bassist, he played guitar for The Strangers, The Lonely Ones, Neil Landon & The Burnettes and The Loving Kind. In 1969 he left the Jimi Hendrix Experience. His bass lines can be heard on the masterpieces „Are You Experienced„, „Axis: Bold as Love“ (both 1967) and „Electric Ladyland“ (1968).

In 1972 Noel Redding moved to Ireland and formed The Noel Redding Band with Eric Bell from Thin Lizzy, Dave Clarke, Les Sampson and Robbie Walsh.They recorded two studio albums and broke up in 1976. Redding kept up recording and touring over the years. On the 11th May 2003 Noel Redding passed away at the age of 57. He was found dead in his home in Clonakilty. It was reported that Redding died from „shock haemorrhage due to oesophageal varices in reaction to cirrhosis of the liver“.

The Rolling Stones – Beggars Banquet (1968)

On the 6th December 1968 the legendary Rolling Stones album „Beggars Banquet“ was released by Decca Records (UK) and London Records (USA). The ten songs were recorded between March and July 1968 at the Olympic Studios in London and marked for The Rolling Stones the return to the Rock sounds after the psychedelic LP „Their Satanic Majesties Request“ (1967).

Jimmy Miller produced all tracks and he remembers about the difficulties of working with Brian Jones during the sessions:
„He shows up occasionally when he was in the mood to play, and he could never really be relied on: When he would show up at a session – let’s say he had just bought a sitar that day, he’d feel like playing it, so he’d look in his calendar to see if the Stones were in. Now he may have missed the previous four sessions. We’d be doing let’s say, a blues thing. He’d walk in with a sitar, which was totally irrelevant to what we were doing, and want to play it. I used to try to accommodate him. I would isolate him, put him in a booth and not record him onto any track that we really needed. And the others, particularly Mick and Keith, would often say to me, ‚Just tell him to piss off and get the hell out of here‘.“

Jeal-Luc Godard directed the documentary „Sympathy for the Devil„, which shows the recording process of the album. Here’s the official trailer:

The original cover for the album – a depicting a bathroom wall covered with graffiti – was rejected first by Decca records. So they had chosen this neutral design:

The digitally remastered version was released years later with the original artwork. „Beggars Banquet“ became a milestone in Rock history and is considered as one of the best Stones albums. It features classic songs like „Sympathy for the Devil„, „Street Fighting Man“ and „No Expectations„.

Happy birthday to James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix, who was born on the 27th November 1942 in Seattle, Washington. Jimi is still considered as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In the sixties he started his career and worked with The Isley Brothers, Little Richard and Curtis Knight and the Squires. In 1966 Hendrix moved to London and started his own group The Jimi Hendrix Experience and recorded the three legendary milestones “Are You Experienced“, “Axis: Bold as Love” (both 1967) and “Electic Ladyland” (1968) including the  hits „Hey Joe„, „Purple Haze„, „The Wind Cries Mary“ and „Voodoo Chile„.

In 1969 Hendrix headlined the festival in Woodstock and one year later at the Isle of Wight. On the 18th September 1970, Jimi Hendrix died from barbiturate-related asphyxia at the age of only 27 years.

Although his very short career spanned only over four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in Rock history. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and Jimi was appropriately described as „arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music“.

Peter Green

On the 29th October 1946, Mr. Peter Allen Greenbaum aka Peter Green was born in Behnal Green, London, UK. The British Blues Rock guitarist and singer was the founder of the legendary Fleetwood Mac (1967). In 1970 he left the band and started later a successful solo career. Many of his songs were covered by artists like Santana, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Judas Priest or Gary Moore, just to name a few. Also his very unique guitar style influenced a lot of other musicians all around the world.

Green’s first band was „Bobby Dennis and the Dominoes“, later he was a member of the Rhythm and Blues band „The Muskrats“, then he joined „The Tridents“ (in which he played the bass). In 1966 he was the lead guitar player in Peter Bardens‚ band „Peter B’s Looners“ where he met drummer Mick Fleetwood. In the same year, Green was asked to take Eric Clapton’s place in John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and he made his recording debut with the Bluesbreakers on the album „A Hard Road„, which was released in 1967. The LP featured the two Peter Green compositions „The same Way“ and „The Supernatural“. Shortly after that, he decided to found his own band – Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. The line up featured Mick Fleetwood on drums, Jeremy Spencer on guitar and Bob Brunning on bass, who only stayed for a very short time and was replaced by John McVie in September 1967. Although the first single „I believe my Time ain’t long“ didn’t chart, the debut album „Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac“ was a success. Also the second LP „Mr. Wonderful“ (1968), which was released under the shortened moniker Fleetwood Mac, was a typically Blues album. In the same year the classic „Black Magic Woman“ was released as a single. The song became a big hit for Santana (which is featured on his album „Abraxas“ in 1970). In 1969 the instrumental „Albatross“ went No. 1 on the British Singles Charts and more hits followed like „Oh Well„, „Man of the World“ (both 1969) and „The Green Manalishi“ (1970), which was later covered by the Metal Gods of Judas Priest.

After the third studio album „Then Play On„, Peter Green left Fleetwood Mac in May 1970 and did some various recording sessions, before he completeley disappeared – more or less – from the scene. In the late nineties he formed his new band Peter Green Splinter Group. The group recorded nine albums before splitting up in 2004. Five years later Peter Green began recording and touring under the moniker Peter Green and Friends.

Hey Joe (UK Single)

On the 23rd October 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded their first single. Jimi, Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Noel Redding (bass) choosed the traditional „Hey Joe„, which the trio recorded in London at De Lane Lea studios.The single was produced by Chas Chandler and hit the stores on the 16th December 1966 in the UK with „Stone Free“ on the flip side. And it was the first top ten hit for Jimi Hendrix and his band – the song reached No. 6 on the UK Single Charts. US fans had to wait for the single release until 1st May 1967 – with „51st Anniversary“ on the B-side. Contrary to the British market the song failed to chart in the USA.

Jimi Hendrix Funeral (1st October 1970)

On the 1st October 1970 Jimi Hendrix was buried at The Greenwood Cemetery (Dunlop Baptist Church) in Seattle. Many people showed up and paid last respects to Hendrix. The whole family and close friends arrived in twenty-four limousines and more than two hundred people attended the funeral. Among the many mouners were Jimi’s band mates  Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding and other musicians (Miles Davis, Eric Burdon, John Hammond and Johnny Winter).

On the 18th September 1970 another outstanding musician passed away far too early:
Mr. James Marshall „Jimi“ Hendrix died at the age of only 27 years. Hendrix is still considered as one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. He started his career in the backing band of The Isley Brothers. Then he worked for Little Richard until the mid-1965 and after that he was in the band of Curtis Knight called Curtis Knight and the Squires. In late 1966 Chas Chandler from The Animals discovered the outstanding talent of Jimi Hendrix and so he moved from the USA to England to start his own band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. With this group he recorded the three legendary albums „Are You Experienced„, „Axis: Bold as Love“ (both 1967) and „Electic Ladyland“ (1968). In 1969 Hendrix headlined the festival in Woodstock and one year later at the Isle of Wight. On the 18th September 1970 Hendrix died from barbiturate-related asphyxia at the age of 27.

Music Diary – 2nd September

Today in 1964 the Rolling Stones recorded the song „Little Red Rooster“ in London at the Regent Sound Studios. The track was originally written by the Blues legend Willie Dixon and also recorded by another Blues icon – Mr. Chester Arthur Burnett better known as Howlin‘ Wolf. The Single was released on 13th November 1964 and reached number one on the UK Single Charts.

Back in 1968 the Rolling Stones single „Street Fighting Man“ was released. The track is from the legendary studio album „Beggars Banquet“ which hit the shops on the 6th December 1968.
