Fred Lincoln „Link“ Wray Jr. (2nd May 1929 – 5th November 2005)

On the 5th November 2005, Mr. Fred Lincoln „Link“ Wray Jr. died at the age of 76. The guitarist was famous for his very unique style and he invented the „Fuzz“-sound. In 1958 his instrumental tune „Rumble“ reached No. 16 in the Singles Chart in the USA. The track was banned on several radio statinos, because of glorifying juvenile delinquency – a special rarity for an instrumental piece.

Link Wray was born on 2nd May 1929 in Dunn, North Carolina and he was half Shawnee Indian ancestry. He recorded three songs for American Indian tribes: „Shawnee“, „Comanche“ and „Apache„, which was an instrumental composed by Jerry Lordan and became a hit in the United Kingdom for The Shadows in the sixties. In the seventies he did some several projects and recordings with John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service), James Hutchinson and Robert Gordon, before moving to Denmark in the eighties, where he spent his last years on an island. On the 5th November 2005 Link Wray died of heart failure at the age of 76.
