DEVASTATIONS – Vienna (Chelsea)

Tom Carlyon (Vocals & Bass), Hugo Cran (Drums & Percussion), Conrad Standish (Guitar) & Andrea Lee (Keyboards) created a wonderful sound landscape at the Chelsea in Vienna. The Devastations are originally from Australia, but I was told that they work and live nowadays in Europe, played that night songs from their two releases „The Devastations“ and „Coal„. And as far I remember also some brandnew tunes which should be released on „Yes, U„. And if I’m right they performed the wonderful „The saddest Sound“ too – one of their best compositions!

Support by the local band The Booze Family

Thanks to my girlfriend at that time who gave me this ticket as a birthday present 😉 So it was the very first time for me to see a real legend – The Killer himself, Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis! As far as I can remember it was a short set but he gave us everything we expected – a wild Rock’n’Roll show with all his legendary hits like „Whole lotta Shakin‘ goin‘ on“ or „Great Balls of Fire„.

O’DEATH – Ebensee (Kino)

As you might know I’m very addicted to a Denver band called Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, which I was going to see live for the first time in April 2009. And as I was told that O’Death from the US is playing at the Kino in Ebensee I supposed something in that way: A very intense performance which will blow me away. Well, and this happened. Greg Jamie (Vocals & Guitar), Gabe Darling (Ukulele, Guitar & Banjo), David Rogers-Berry (Drums & Chains), Bob Pycior (Fiddle) & Newman (Bass) did a breathtaking performance which left me speechless in some way.

PJ HARVEY – Munich (Colosseum)
Support: GIANT SAND (feat. Howe Gelb, Joey Burns & John Convertino)

My first PJ Harvey live experience in Munich at the Colosseum (and NOT at the Babylon like it is printed on the ticket!), which was located in an area called Kunstpark Ost, where a lot of bars and locations were built. Before the show Giant Sand feat. Howe Gelb, Joey Burns and John Convertion did the support. Well, a few years later two of that line up should be well known all over the world as Calexico!

Polly Jean Harvey had a little cold and so some light problems with her voice. She excused during the songs for this but nevertheless her performance was brilliant. Most of the songs were from the current album called „Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea„.

Some Songs of that night were:

This Wicked Tongue
This Is Love
Good Fortune
Send His Love To Me
A Place Called Home
30

REINHARD MEY – Salzburg (Sporthalle)

One of my heroes when I was a little child. My Mum loved this singer and songwriter from Germany, who was  also very famous in France in the sixties/seventies under his French name Frederik Mey. Beside this he is also very well known in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. My girlfriend at that time was still a huge fan so I took this possibility to see Reinhard Mey live the very first time at Salzburg. Some of his hits are „Über den Wolken„, „Wie vor Jahr und Tag„, „Ich bin Klempner von Beruf“ or „Die heiße Schlacht am kalten Buffett„. Also he played many songs from his current album called „Farben„.

JACKIE LEVEN – Munich (Muffathalle – Cafe)

A friend of mine take me along to this show of the British folk musician Jackie Leven at the small Cafe at the Muffathalle in Munich. A very nice evening and Jackie was talking a lot between the songs. And I can remember he was saying that the most „plastic pubs“ are located in Vienna! And I have to admit that he was right. Unfortunately Jackie Leven passed away on the 14th November 2011. He is sorely missed but his beautiful songs will live on forever …

DEE DEE RAMONE – Munich (Club 2)

Another legend on my personal concert list: Dee Dee Ramone (born as Douglas Glen Colvin) from the one and only THE RAMONES! It was a typically Punk-Rock-Night: A tiny and full crowded club, sweat and smoke was everywhere and Dee Dee rocked with his band like hell! Just counting „One, Two, Three, Four“ on every song 😉 A friend of mine met him backstage before the show and so I got a signed copy of the release „Greatest & Latest“ which was the current album that time. Beside some new songs Dee Dee re-recorded also some Ramones classics for this one.

AC/DC – Munich (Olympiahalle)

Back in 2001 I had my very first AC/DC live experience in the same city and almost at the same location. At that time Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Phil Rudd, Cliff Williams and Brian Johnson rocked the Olympiastadium, which is a stone throw away from the Olympiahalle. The concert was amazing – you can prove this by watching the official DVD “Stiff Upper Lip Live”, which features the whole show. As I was very far away (on a sitting place around 150 meters away from the stage) then, this time I was very looking forward to see AC/DC quite nearer – and with my special “Fan Ticket” it would be possible.

AC/DC - Munich (Olympiahalle)(27.03.2009) © Alex Melomane

As we arrived by tube a lot of people were standing around with signs in their hands “Tickets wanted!”. And it was obvious that really nobody sold tickets! This experience was really new to me, because at every concert I went – especially when they were officially sold out, just like AC/DC at that night – there were enough possibilities to buy tickets. But not this time.

As we had special “Fan Member Tickets” we entered the Olympiahalle via a special entry. Then we headed down to the arena and looked for a nice place. Finally we were standing approximately in the 15th row on the left side just in front of the stage. At 20.00 the support act The Answer from Ireland began to play. My friend told me before, that this band is really a very good one. Musically nothing special (classic hardrock) but with a lot of power. The singer reminded me immediately on Robert Plant: Long hair, the same acting on stage and also the singing was very similar. The others (drums, guitar and bass) played a fresh heavy rock sound, which was like Led Zeppelin meets Guns N’ Roses. Nothing really special, but nevertheless very impressing in some way. The Answer created an excellent atmosphere and did a very good support job. After approximately 40 minutes they left the stage and so we waited for AC/DC. In the meantime we drank some beers which were served in special AC/DC plastic cups.

As the clock showed 21.05 the lights went out and on the big screen above the stage a clip started. A very funny cartoon video, which featured AC/DC and some hot and nice ladies. Typically AC/DC – in one scene you saw Brian Johnson smiling out of the so-called “Rock’n’Roll Train”, and a few seconds later the head of a blonde girl appeared after some special job – I guess, you know what I mean 😉

Then you saw Angus as the “Devil Engine Driver” putting more and more coals in the oven. The train got faster and faster, the heat was going to explode and two of the girls cared about Angus. As he was smiling and his devil tail got harder, it seems, that he also liked this kind of emergency treatment. So there was no way to stop the train and so it headed with full force into the station and exploded finally. After that a firework was started AC/DC entered the stage with the new track “Rock’n’Roll Train”. What an opening – just perfect and by starting to headbang I got the creeps immediately! It was just amazing to see these legends rocking with full force! Imagine – these guys are all over 50 years old and still rock like hell! Behind the band there was a big derailed locomotive installed. The classic “Hell ain’t a bad Place to be” followed and it sounded like always in the last three decades – straight forward with these magic riffs. Speaking about magic riffs – “Back in Black” was next and the audience went nuts again! “We’ve got a song for you from the new album” introduced Brian Johnson “Big Jack”. During the refrains, really everybody was singing along with the former Geordie front man. “Munchen, we’ve got something for you” said Brian before the classic “Dirty Deeds done dirt cheap” was played. Not later than this song it was obvious that AC/DC was in a perfect mood: Brian sang his lungs out, Angus rocked and headbanged like always, Phil drummed exactly like a Swiss watch, Cliff worked on his bass by shaking his head all the time and rhythm master Malcolm riffed in his very own and special way. “Shot down in Flames” reminded us on Bon Scott again and with “Thunderstruck” the audience was proved again for its vocal abilities. “This is from the ‘Black Ice’ album – this one’s called ‘Black Ice’”. Just fantastic that they played this one, because it’s one of my personal favorites of the last LP. And it was another evidence that the fans, who cheered loudly, really love the new recording. After that another classic came along: “It’s getting hot in here! We’re gonna sing a song about a dirty woman. She was a two faced woman, told two faced lies. She was so mean. It’s a song called ‘The Jack’ – come on and sing with us”, Brian instructed us, while Angus played some riffs and notes during the introduction. So it was no surprise that everybody was singing along again and during this long version of approximately nine minutes, Angus made his striptease and showed us finally his AC/DC pants. Then the bell was coming down and the next highlight rocked us with full force: “Hells Bells”, in which everybody headbanged and sang like there was no tomorrow. With “Shoot to Thrill” a song followed, which was played unbelievably exact and perfect! I never heard this one in such a fantastic version! Angus rocked the whole stage and Brian – although he has to fight with his voice – gave really more than just 100 percent! “Okay, we do a song from the new album – this one’s called ‘War Machine’, said Brian with his typically dirty laughing. What can I say? Another brandnew song which fit in the setlist perfectly. The riffs, energy and rhythm – typically AC/DC. “Anything goes”, which is in my opinion a weak song, was nevertheless powerful and it seemed that the audience didn’t care about my thoughts and still rocked on. With “You shook me all Night long” another song from “Back in Black” followed. Before I saw AC/DC the first time live, I never liked this one too. But back in 2001, when I had my first live experience with Angus & Co, I had tears in my eyes when I listened to this tune, which was played in all radio stations all over the world back in 1980. So I smiled and enjoyed it completely again! “T.N.T.” showed us Angus as a perfect “Oi, Oi, Oi” singer! Unbelievable how fit this man still is! And for “Whole lotta Rosie” he showed us again, how a over 50 years old guitar player can rock! Wonderful solos and his typically acting made this evergreen very special again. During this song a big “Rosie” was blown up at the stage and sat on the derailed locomotive. And it seemed that she tipped rhythmically with her left foot to the song! With “Let there be Rock”, which endured over 15 minutes, the audience forgot everything. All were headbanging like hell and during this song all covers (from “High Voltage” until “Black Ice”) were shown on the big screen. Especially when “If you want Blood, you’ve got it” (with the unforgettable Bon Scott) appeared, the audience cheered loudly. Yeah – this man will be never forgotten! Although Brian forgot some lines, the performance of this one was simply outstanding. Angus ran with his guitar from the stage to a sort of bridge which was installed between the first 30 rows. There a car hoist lifted him higher on a special small stage on which he rocked, shaked, sweat and wriggled on the floor like in the older days. With “See you, good Night” Brian finished the song and the encore break followed. After approximately five minutes Angus was lifted on the main stage. With devil horns on his head he played some solo tunes before “Highway to Hell” transferred us back in 1979. At the end of the song it was obvious that Brian has almost lost his voice, but he fought and tortured himself to find the right notes. Really very impressive! Then the well known intro of “For those about to Rock (We salute you)” played by Angus made us clear that this is the final song of the night. The guns were brought up on the stage and fired at the end of the songs very loudly. “We salute you all, see you again” were the last words from Brian before AC/DC left the stage.

So I’m really fucking happy, that I will have two more chances to see AC/DC live again in May (Munich – Stadium) and June (Paris – Stadium) this year! 1965“ was the fantastic release in 1998 by the fabulous band The Afghan Whigs. As a huge fan I was very looking forward to the gig in Vienna at the Szene. And I was very surprised that the show was not sold out – to be honest, I do think that the hall was only one-third full. Anyway, Greg Dulli and his band gave us a unforettable performance. AL DI MEOLA – Wels (Schlachthof)

Another hero of my youth is Mr. Al Di Meola! He is one of the best guitar players in the world and many of you should know him from the legendary album „Friday Night In San Francisco“ (1981) which he recorded with the fantastic guitar men Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin.
For me it was a real sensation that Al Di Meola is going to play in the small city of Wels at the Schlachthof. Due to some traffic and car problems the beginning was delayed and so we have to wait appr. two hours before the show began. Most of the songs were taken from the current album at that time called „Tirami Su„. The sound he created with his band was a sort of Fusion-Jazz-Rock thing, which was nice in some way, but also a little bit tiring. But when he began to play his classic tunes everything was forgiven – especially when he played one of my personal favorites called „Race with Devil on Spanish Highway„. During this song one of Al Di Meola’s string was torn but this was not really a problem for this outstanding guitar player 😉Al DiMeola - Wels (Schlachthof) Stage Sheet (29.03.1988) © Alex Melomane

FATAL SHORE – Ebensee (Kino)

The tiny city of Ebensee is not that far away from my place so it’s always a good idea to visit concerts at the Kino. When the Australian/British group Fatal Shore was on the bill I didn’t really know this band but I’ve heard that there are some connections to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. And as a huge fan of Mr. Cave I was very curious about the music that night. Singer & Guitarist Phil Shoenfelt, Bruno Adams (Vocals & Guitar) and Chris Hughes (Drums) convinced me immediately when they opened the show with „Black Venus„. Great performance and fantastic songs hooked me that much that I bought all Fatal Shore releases on CD after the show.

This is one of those shows that you are attending because you don’t want to stay at home and watch TV. So I decided to see this Mexican crossover band Molotov at the Szene in Vienna and I have to admit that these Gringos blew me away! Very tight and heavy performance by excellent musicians who changed their instruments nearly song after song! Most of the tunes were from their debut „¿Dónde Jugarán las Niñas?“ which features the hit single „Gimme tha Power„. But they also did an amazing cover version of the Queen classic „Bohemian Rhapsody„.

THE TIGER LILLIES – Graz (Orpheum)

This was the first time when I saw The Tiger Lillies live performing at the Orpheum in Graz. This is that sort of band you have to see live at least once. So if you have the chance just do yourself a favor!

SONS & DAUGHTERS – Munich (Muffathalle)
Support by the local band called FIVE!FAST!!HITS!!!

This one was a free concert and as I discovered this band from Scotland just a few months before (they recorded a breathtaking debut called „Repulsion Box“ back in 2005). So I wanted to convince myself of the live qualities of the Sons and Daughters. Great performance, but I was a little disappointed about the setlist – no „Iodine“ ….

After the show I bought myself a shirt and Scott Paterson (Guitarist) and David Gow (Drummer) signed some covers for me – thanks!

PROJECT PITCHFORK – Vienna (Szene)

Another example for „before you are sitting at home and watching boring TV shows, you should do yourself a favor and go to a concert“. Nice performing, interesting Goth people and I can remember that the drummer was sitting in a cage during the whole performance at the Szene in Vienna. Anyway – a nice evening but I didn’t become a real fan of this Electro-Wave-Goth band from Germany. I do think that Peter Spilles and his band touring Europe at that time to promote the album „Eon:Eon“ by Project Pitchfork.

STEVE WYNN – Vienna (Chelsea)

Steve Wynn acoustic performance with Eric van Loo (Bass) and Robert Lloyd (Mandolin, Electric Guitar and Keyboard) at the Chelsea in Vienna. Another wonderful performance by Steve. It was fantastic to hear his songs in stripped down versions.

„Nothing but good times in Vienna. You want music stories?
Packed show at the Chelsea club, our first actual punk rock club of the tour.
No problem. Our gypsy renegade folk worked there just fine and
it was one of the best shows yet. I hope someone was taping it.“
