Welcome to my Music Diary – today for the 2nd May!
On the 2nd May 1980, the final Joy Division concert took place at the University of Birmingham’s High Hall (UK). Two weeks later, on the 18th May 1980, singer Ian Curtis commited suicide. Curtis‘, who suffered from epilepsy and depression, hung himself in his kitchen in Macclesfield, Cheshire (UK). The tragedy happened on the eve of Joy Division’s first North American tour. The remaining trio consisting of Bernard Sumner (guitarist), Peter Hook (bass) and Stephen Morris (drums) formed shortly after this the band New Order.
The setlist of the final gig included the track „Ceremony„, which was later recorded and released by New Order. The very last song Ian Curtis performed live on stage was „Digital„. The complete recording of this final Joy Division performance is featured on the album „Still„, which was released in October 1981.
